Washington, June 25 2022
The Washington Dutch Lions FC women's team is halfway through the 2022 season trying to defend their 2021 WPSL Conference Championship. The team is currently sitting in third place with a 2-2-0 record with 6 points, while Conference leader Penn Fusion SA won all four games and has 12 points.
The Lions started the season where they left off in 2021 and beat Athena Soccer Club 8-0 in their season opener. In their second game they traveled to Penn Fusion SA, who turned out to be a very strong team and the Lions lost 3-0 on the road. After a postponed game vs SJEB FC, the Lions bounced back beating Philadelphia Lone Star SC 1-0 at home. Unfortunately the team lost the next game away vs CAFC Ospreys with a close 1-0.
The Lions face Penn Fusion SA again on June 26 in a must win game to keep the Conference Championship.
CEO Martin de Groot commented on the season so far: "Besides the already strong teams from last year - CAFC Ospreys and SJEB FC - Penn Fusion SA joined our Conference and I thought they have a very strong team. It makes our league even more competitive and we will have to work hard to make the WPSL National Playoffs."
