WDL FC also wins second game, beat Athena SC 6-2

Win puts Lions in 1st position in conference standings

Washington Dutch Lions FC (2-0-0) faced Athena SC in their second game of the 2021 season and kept three points at home after a solid 6-2 win.

The Lions came into this game motivated after starting the season with a win in their first game. The team started the game strong with a goal by LB Abigail Fusca in the 6th minute and did not look back. Five minutes later Striker Maddy Oliver put in a cross to #12 Cami Johnstone that put the Lions up by two in the 11th minute. Athena then scored a goal to put them within 1 goal. In the 28th minute Pryia Nair scored a beautiful goal guiding it perfectly over the keeper. Nair has scored a goal in both games of the season. But once again Athena SC would score to put the game within one goal. What seemed to be a 3-2 scoreline going into halftime was blown wide open with a powerful volley from #11 Cami Taylor in the last minute of the half, giving the Lions a huge boost and a two-goal gap going into the half.

Coming out of the break is was evident that the Lions made some proper defensive adjustments as they successfully kept Athena SC from scoring in the entire second half. They also kept the pressure on the offensive side creating plays in the final third and finishing the plays with beautiful crosses into the box. The constant attack earned the Lions two more goals, one in the 64th minute by Maddy Oliver and another one in the 82nd minute by Paula Germino. The two scores of the second half and great defensive effort secured the second consecutive win keeping the record perfect with an impressive 6-2 win. Three players (#1 Maddy Oliver, #11 Cami Taylor, #20 Priya Nair) scored one goal and had one assist each.

The next matchup will be a rematch against Athena SC on June 12, but this time the team will be on the road going into their first away game.
