Trailing two points with Ospreys playing number three SJEB this weekend
Washington Dutch Lions FC (3-1-1, 10 points) played Ospreys twice this week in a battle that seemed to decide the Conference Championship. Ospreys had one tie coming into the first game (vs Athena SC) on June 20 and was therefore two points behind, but won 0-2 in a physical game. The Lions struggled to play their own game and were also unlucky not converting the chances they did get.
On Thursday the Lions traveled to Ospreys knowing what to expect. After 0-0 at halftime the Lions were able to take the lead when Dakota Chan had a great goal. Ospreys however scored the equalizer when a corner kick was not cleared and Ospreys scored after a disputed handball, but the referee awarded the goal. The last 10 minutes the team of Michel Vanderhart played with five forwards to go for the win and this resulted in two more open chances but unfortunately the ball did not go into the net leaving the Lions trailing two points behind Ospreys in the standings.
The results of this week does mean there are three teams still battling for first place. Ospreys (5-2-0, 17 points) is currently in first place but they play away this weekend vs number three SJEB (3-0-2, 9 points). If SJEB wins the game and also their remaining two games they pass Ospreys and finish first. The Lions play Old Dominion Cesena (0-0-5, 0 points) twice before traveling to SJEB for the last game of the season. In case Ospreys and SJEB tie or SJEB wins, then the last game of season between SJEB and the Lions could be the championship game.
